Dato’ Chong Hon Fatt’s solo art exhibition opened last Sunday at the Khoo Kongsi Art Gallery in Georgetown, Penang. The event began at 2:00 p.m. and concluded at 3:00 p.m., drawing art enthusiasts and cultural patrons to the historical venue located at 18 Cannon Square.
The exhibition features an extensive collection of Dato’ Chong’s artwork showcasing traditional buildings and cultural scenes across Penang. The collection includes paintings dated from April 21 to May 3, 2025, displaying various heritage structures and street scenes that capture the essence of local architecture and community life.
Visitors began arriving at 1:30 p.m., giving them time to mingle before the formal proceedings. The event was organised by Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi, one of Penang’s most prominent clan associations and custodians of cultural heritage.
Mr. Khoo Boo Yeang, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Leong San Tong and Chairman of the Board of Governors at SJKC Sin Kang, delivered the opening address at 2:00 p.m. His remarks highlighted the significance of preserving cultural heritage through artistic expression.
At 2:10 p.m., Dato’ Chong Hon Fatt took the stage to speak about his artistic journey and the inspiration behind his works. The artist’s remarks offered insight into his creative process and his dedication to documenting Penang’s architectural heritage.
Guest of Honour Mr. Lee Khai, Chairman of the Penang State Art Gallery, delivered his address at 2:20 p.m., emphasising the importance of supporting local artists and preserving cultural identity through visual arts.
The official opening ceremony took place at 2:30 p.m., marked by traditional formalities that celebrated both the artist and the cultural significance of the exhibition. Following the ceremony, guests were invited to tour the exhibition space, where they viewed Dato’ Chong’s paintings depicting temples, shophouses, and street scenes characteristic of Penang’s rich cultural landscape.
The exhibition showcases Dato’ Chong’s distinctive artistic style, which combines traditional techniques with a unique perspective on local heritage sites. His works are known for capturing the intricate details and atmosphere of Penang’s historical architecture.
A tea reception concluded the event at 3:00 p.m., allowing attendees to discuss the artwork while enjoying refreshments in the historic surroundings of the Khoo Kongsi complex.
