The International Conference of Butterfly Exhibitors and Suppliers (ICBES 2024) is hosted by Entopia in Penang from 3rd to 10th November. This will be the third time Penang has hosted ICBES, following successful conferences in 2000 and 2009.
The conference welcomes nearly 100 participants from 20 countries and include an opening ceremony attended by Penang State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy, YB Wong Hon Wai.
“Butterflies are much more than delicate creatures that capture our imagination; they are vital indicators of the health of our ecosystems. Their presence, or absence, can tell us a great deal about the state of the environment,” said YB Wong Hon Wai when speaking at the opening of ICBES 2024 here today.
“As we face the growing challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss, the work you all do, whether through exhibits, research or conservation programmes, becomes ever more vital. Efforts ensure that future generations will not only experience the beauty of butterflies but also understand the role they play in maintaining the ecological balance.”
International Association of Butterfly and Exhibitors & Suppliers (IABES) President Kimberly Kelly stated in her speech “The work that we do, whether it’s through education, breeding and exhibits, play an essential role in ensuring that the future generations can continue to appreciate the beauty and importance of butterflies. As we come together over the next few days, we have a unique opportunity to share the knowledge, exchange ideas and explore innovative solutions to the challenges that we face.”
Joseph Goh, CEO of Entopia, highlighted that “Penang, known for its rich biodiversity and commitment to conservation, is a perfect setting for this important gathering. Over the next few days, you will have the chance to explore some of the most iconic natural landmarks including Penang Hill & The National Park.”
Ashwin Gunasekeran, CEO of the Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PCEB), expressed excitement about supporting the conference and welcoming delegates from around the world to experience what Penang has to offer. The Estimated Economic Impact (EEI) for this event is RM1.45m, underscoring the significant benefits it will bring to the local economy.
This conference underscores Penang’s growing reputation as a hub for environmental gatherings, attracting international experts and contributing to the local economy and cultural enrichment.
