A Century in the Making: 1926 Heritage Hotel Penang Opens Its Doors Again

One hundred years after it first welcomed residents to Jalan Burma, 1926 Heritage Hotel Penang is back as part of The Unlimited Collection by The Ascott Limited.

The property, originally built in 1926 as British official residences for colonial administrative officers, has been carefully restored and relaunched in the heart of George Town. Its white and beige façade carries the hallmarks of Anglo-Malay architecture from that transitional era, and a palm tree flanked by two panthers serves as the hotel’s recurring motif from entrance to lobby.

“As travel is increasingly shaped by culture and experience, we are seeing growing demand for destinations with a strong sense of identity. In line with Visit Malaysia 2026, 1926 Heritage Hotel offers a distinctive Penang story that connects travellers to the destination in a more meaningful and authentic way. Marking its centennial, the property has been carefully revitalised with respect for its original character, ensuring it remains part of Penang’s heritage for generations to come,” said Mondi Mecja, Country General Manager, Ascott Malaysia.

Guests can choose from Heritage Rooms, the Straits Suite with its separate bedroom and study, or the 52 sqm Heritage Garden Patio Room that opens directly to a private garden and pool access. Meeting rooms, a gym, a spa by Sensorium, and a central courtyard garden round out the facilities.

Dining centres on Root House by Gēn, a Chinese bistro from chef-founder Johnson Wong, whose restaurant Gēn re-entered Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2026. The menu traces the culinary traditions of Malaysia’s Chinese diaspora across regions and generations. U-Bar, the Heritage Collection by Daily Coffee, and the U-Shop complete the on-site offerings.

The hotel is located at 227, Jalan Burma, 10050 George Town, Pulau Pinang.
