GEORGE TOWN: The historic Suffolk House came alive with an air of cross-continental camaraderie as luminaries and dignitaries gathered to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the George Town-Adelaide sister city connection. The illustrious YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, Chief Minister of Penang, stood among the hosts, joined by the Deputy Chief Minister II, YB Jagdeep Singh Deo, and the esteemed Mayor of Penang Island City Council, YBhg Dato’ Ir Rajendran P. Anthony.
This evening was graced by the presence of a distinguished guest, Her Excellency Madam Frances Adamson AC, marking her inaugural visit to Penang after assuming her role as the 36th Governor of South Australia. The diplomatic camaraderie was further amplified by the attendance of Ms Clare Gatehouse, Chargé d’Affaires of the Australian High Commission, and the celebrity touch added by none other than Adam Liaw, the renowned Celebrity MasterChef.
The event also witnessed the convergence of delegates from the Department of Premier & Cabinet of South Australia, as well as the Australian High Commission, reflecting the shared vision of fostering international relations. The diplomatic landscape was beautifully colored by the presence of Consul Generals representing various Consulates, creating a vibrant tapestry of global unity.
But why the Suffolk House, you ask? This charming venue wasn’t picked by mere chance. It once housed Captain Francis Light, a historical figure of great significance, whose son, Colonel William Light, went on to lay the foundation of Adelaide, decades later. The very walls of the Suffolk House seem to resonate with the intertwined destinies of these two cities.
In a heartfelt address, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow highlighted the visionary efforts of two luminaries – the late Premier of South Australia, Don Dunstan, and the late Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu, Penang’s second Chief Minister. Their collaborative spirit ignited the sister city connection on December 8, 1973, paving the way for half a century of cultural exchange, friendship, and shared growth.
As the evening’s festivities unfolded against the backdrop of rich history and promising futures, the celebration paid homage to the past while kindling optimism for the years yet to come.
