Sections of Tan and Chew jetties in Penang have been closed due to significant damage caused by high tides and strong winds. The recent weather conditions have severely impacted these historic jetties, which are part of the Clan Jetties, a residential neighbourhood within George Town, Penang.
The high tides and winds have resulted in substantial damage, prompting the closure of affected areas. This situation has highlighted the vulnerability of these structures to extreme weather conditions. Nearly 200 trees have fallen across Penang over the past three days, further exacerbating the situation.
The Clan Jetties, including Tan and Chew jetties, are significant cultural and historical sites. They were developed by various Chinese clans who settled in the area. The Chew Jetty, for instance, is the most visited and is known for its annual Jade Emperor’s birthday celebrations. It houses places of worship dedicated to Chinese deities such as Baosheng and Xuantian.
The damage to these jetties is not only a concern for the residents but also for the preservation of these heritage sites. The Penang Island City Council has designated almost all buildings at the Clan Jetties as Category II-protected structures to preserve their historical significance.
In addition to the immediate damage, the high tides have also been detected at several other jetties, including Lim Jetty, further indicating the widespread impact of the weather conditions.
Efforts are being made to restore and maintain these jetties. For example, it has been announced that the old and decaying clan jetties in Penang will receive a RM650,000 facelift next month, which will help in preserving these structures.
The combination of strong winds and unusually high tides has brought waves slamming into the seaside spots, causing significant disruption and damage to the area.
