Millions Flock to Penang for Thaipusam 2025 Celebration

Thaipusam 2025 is expected to draw an unprecedented number of devotees and visitors to Penang, with estimates suggesting over 1.5 million people will participate in the festivities. This significant increase is attributed to the coincidence of Thaipusam with school holidays, which is anticipated to attract a larger crowd than in previous years.

The festival, celebrated on February 11, 2025, is a pivotal event in the Hindu calendar, particularly for the Tamil community. It honors Lord Murugan, the youngest son of Lord Shiva and the god of war and victory. The name “Thaipusam” is derived from the Tamil month “Thai” and the star “Pusam,” which reaches its highest point during the festival.

In Penang, the celebrations are meticulously organized by the Penang Hindu Endowments Board (LWHPP), with its chairman, RSN Rayer, overseeing the preparations. Rayer emphasized the extensive efforts to ensure a smooth and successful event, highlighting the introduction of a tracking system for the Golden Chariot. This system, developed in collaboration with Digital Penang, allows devotees to track the chariot’s movement in real-time using the “Pathrikai & Chariot Tracker” app. This innovation helps devotees plan their prayers and make offerings along the chariot’s route.

The Golden Chariot will depart from the Maha Mariamman Temple on Lebuh Queen at 6 am on February 10 and arrive at the Sri Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani Temple the following day. It will return to the Maha Mariamman Temple on February 12 and is scheduled to arrive on February 13.

The festivities in Penang are centered around the Sri Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani Temple, one of the oldest and most revered temples in the region. The temple, also known as the Waterfall Temple, is a significant site for pilgrims and offers a stunning view of George Town. The celebrations here include a silver chariot procession, which is a highlight of the event.

RSN Rayer also appealed to participants to maintain the sanctity of the festival, avoiding activities such as drinking alcohol or lighting firecrackers. He encouraged the use of face masks, especially for high-risk individuals, and advised early arrival to perform religious rituals. Additionally, he reminded motorists to park their vehicles responsibly and suggested using public transport, which will be provided free of charge by the government.

Thaipusam 2025 promises to be a grand and spiritually significant event, drawing millions of devotees and visitors to Penang and other parts of Malaysia. The meticulous preparations and innovative measures ensure that the festival will be both meaningful and memorable for all participants.
