The Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT), in coordination with its Penang counterpart, carried out a raid in Seberang Jaya, an area noted as a hotspot for “mat rempit” (illegal motorcycle racers), particularly on weekends. The operation, codenamed “Op Motosikal”, commenced at 11 pm.
Bukit Aman JSPT Deputy Director (Enforcement/Traffic Control/Summons Management), DCP Mohd Rozi Jidin, led the operation. As of 9 am, more than 350 motorcyclists had been stopped for inspection and in excess of 250 summonses issued for various offences. All riders and motorcycles were brought to Seberang Jaya Police Station for further action, including urine screening.
Mohd Rozi stated, “This operation is conducted to raise awareness among teenagers who frequently treat this area as their racing circuit.” He added that some riders had accumulated as many as five to seven summonses for offences including riding without a licence and using motorcycles that do not meet specifications. He said, “What is most alarming is that youths as young as 15 were also involved.”
He further expressed concern regarding the increasing involvement of teenagers in illegal racing, pointing out that some individuals had been arrested repeatedly yet continued to disregard the law. Mohd Rozi emphasised the ongoing enforcement efforts and noted the importance of raising public awareness so the community could collectively curb such activities and safeguard other road users.
Mohd Rozi added that, thus far, police had not received any information indicating the involvement of organisers or syndicates behind the illegal racing activities, though intelligence operations remained in progress. He stressed the police would not hesitate to take firm action if any syndicates or individuals coordinating these activities were identified.
