Penang Hits 78% Target With 172,550 Affordable Homes Built

Penang has made significant strides in its housing agenda, achieving 78.43 per cent of its 2030 target with 172,550 affordable homes (Rumah Mampu Milik or RMM) completed as of March 31.

State Housing and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Seri S. Sundarajoo revealed the figures during the signing ceremony of the Settlement Agreement for the proposed Rumah MutiaraKu (RMKu) development by the Penang State Housing Board (LPNPP) in Nibong Tebal.

The overall target stands at 220,000 units by 2030, with the current achievement bringing the state closer to realising its ‘One Family, One Home’ aspiration under the Penang2030 Vision.

‘The state government is committed to ensuring the well-being of the people remains a priority, and housing is an essential basic need in guaranteeing a better quality of life,’ said Sundarajoo.

The Rent-to-Own scheme has delivered 5,096 units, representing 23.16 per cent of its 22,000-unit target. This initiative provides more flexible pathways to homeownership for low- and middle-income groups.

The Urban Renewal Programme has surpassed expectations, achieving 228 per cent of its target with 6,840 units across six identified projects. This demonstrates the effectiveness of policies focused on improving existing housing quality.

‘This is not just a slogan but is translated through inclusive policies and the implementation of housing projects that directly benefit the people,’ Sundarajoo emphasised.

The housing initiatives fall under Strategic Initiative A1 of Penang2030, which focuses on addressing affordability and housing diversity issues. The three-pronged approach encompasses RMM, Rent-to-Own schemes and Urban Renewal programmes.

‘The focus is to enhance the supply of affordable housing, provide a variety of residential options, and expand homeownership opportunities,’ Sundarajoo added.
