Penang’s Multi-Billion Air Cargo Hub Set for 2029 Launch

The first phase of Penang International Logistics Aeropark (PILA), a major air cargo warehouse development, is expected to be completed by 2029, state Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has announced.

Currently, earthworks and soil treatment are underway at the site, with planning permission already secured for the ambitious project. PILA has been projected to handle up to 500,000 tonnes of cargo annually by 2050, providing over 2 million square feet of warehouse space upon completion.

“For the first phase, the air cargo warehouse being developed is expected to support an additional capacity of up to 100,000 tonnes per year,” Chow stated.

The project is a joint venture between Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB). It specifically targets Penang’s burgeoning semiconductor and electrical and electronics (E&E) industries, which form the backbone of the state’s manufacturing sector.

PILA aligns with the state’s broader development frameworks, including Penang Vision 2030, the State Structure Plan 2030, and the ongoing expansion of Penang International Airport. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is expected to officiate the project’s launch ceremony soon.
