Penang Island Set for Parking Fee Hike: What Drivers Need to Know by March 2025

Penang Island Set for Parking Fee Hike: What Drivers Need to Know by March 2025

Parking fees on Penang Island are set to increase starting from March 2025, as announced by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP). The new rates will see a significant rise in parking fees for users.

According to the new rates, the fee for 30 minutes of parking will increase from RM0.40 to RM0.60, representing a 50% hike. For a one-hour parking period, the fee will rise from RM0.80 to RM1.20, also a 50% increase. The daily parking rate will increase from RM6 to RM9, which is a 50% rise as well.

This adjustment is part of the MBPP’s efforts to manage parking demand and optimize the use of parking spaces on the island. The increased fees are expected to discourage long-term parking and encourage the use of alternative transportation methods, aligning with the city’s broader goals of sustainable development and reducing congestion.

While the increase may be seen as a necessary measure to manage urban infrastructure, it is likely to impact residents and visitors who rely on parking facilities. The MBPP will need to balance the need for revenue with the potential inconvenience to the public.
