Penang Hill to Komtar Free Shuttle: A Christmas Holiday Treat for Families

Penang Hill to Komtar Free Shuttle: A Christmas Holiday Treat for Families

The Penang Hill Corporation (PHC), in collaboration with Rapid Penang and the Penang State Government, is set to launch the Penang Hill Free Shuttle Service from December 25 to 29. This initiative, now in its fifth edition, aims to ease traffic congestion around Penang Hill during the upcoming school holidays and promote green initiatives to lower carbon emissions, aligning with the Penang2030 Vision to create a family-focused green and smart state.

The complimentary shuttle service will operate from 9 am to 9 pm, with eight round trips daily at 1.5-hour intervals. The shuttle buses are wheelchair-friendly, ensuring convenience and accessibility for passengers with special needs. Passengers can board the shuttle at Komtar’s Station 9 bus stop on Jalan Ria, located in the underpass next to the Rapid Penang kiosk, to travel to the Penang Hill Lower Station and return. The shuttle buses will be clearly marked with “Penang Hill Free Shuttle” signage and distinct visuals at the pick-up and drop-off points.

The shuttle service timetable is available on PHC’s official website and social media platforms. In the event that the shuttle buses reach full capacity, visitors are encouraged to use the Rapid Penang bus Route 204, which operates from Weld Quay Bus Terminal via Komtar to Penang Hill at regular fares. The frequency of Route 204 is every 35 minutes during peak hours and every 45 minutes during off-peak hours.

This service has shown promising success since its inception, serving thousands of passengers during peak festive periods. In the 2023 year-end school holiday, the Penang Hill Free Shuttle Service recorded over 1,600 passengers. The service also saw a 53% increase in usage during Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2024 compared to the previous year.

The initiative is part of PHC’s commitment to creating a more sustainable and environmentally friendly Penang. By reducing the need for personal vehicles, the shuttle service helps mitigate traffic congestion and parking issues, which are significant challenges during holiday periods. There are fewer than 500 parking spaces available at Penang Hill’s multi-storey car park and its surrounding areas, making the shuttle service a valuable alternative.

PHC encourages visitors to make the most of this free shuttle service, which not only enhances travel convenience but also contributes to a greener and smarter community. The service is designed to provide a stress-free means for both visitors and locals to enjoy the beauty of Penang Hill without the hassles of navigating roads and finding parking.
