Penang bridges to close in stages for cycling event

The Penang Bridge and the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Second Bridge will undergo staged closures on July 28 to accommodate the Penang Fellowship Ride Bridge to Bridge 2024 cycling event.

Daniel Gooi, Penang State youth and sports committee chairman, announced that the Penang Bridge (from Island to Prai) will be closed from 6.30am to 9am. The Second Bridge (from Batu Kawan to the island) will be closed from 9am to 12 noon.

“The Penang Fellowship Ride cycling event is scheduled to start and finish at the Tapak Pesta Sungai Nibong. A number of roads involved in the route will also be closed in stages to ensure the success of the event,” Gooi explained at a press conference today.

The ride will take cyclists through the Penang Bridge, Juru Industrial Road, and Batu Kawan before returning to the Tapak Pesta Sungai Nibong via the Second Bridge and Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu highway.

Gooi revealed that 2,343 participants have registered for the event. The Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak is expected to flag off the ride and will also join the 66km journey, repeating his participation from last year.

This cycling event promises to offer participants a unique opportunity to traverse both of Penang’s iconic bridges, showcasing the state’s impressive infrastructure while promoting health and community engagement.

Motorists are advised to plan their journeys accordingly, taking into account the temporary bridge closures and potential traffic diversions on the day of the event.
