Penang recently played host to a vibrant celebration of Sarawak’s diverse offerings at the inaugural Sarawak Gateway to Borneo Fair. The four-day event, held from 10 to 13 October at Queensbay Mall, brought the essence of Borneo to the Pearl of the Orient through an immersive showcase of Culture, Adventure, Nature, Food, and Festivals (CANFF).
YB Dato Dennis Ngau, Chairman of Sarawak Tourism Board, officially launched the event, representing YB Dato Sri Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Sarawak.
“We’ve brought the heart of Sarawak to Penang, offering a glimpse into our rich tapestry of experiences,” YB Dato Sri Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said in his speech. “From our vibrant cultures to our lush rainforests, Sarawak truly embodies the spirit of Borneo.”
The fair’s cultural offerings took centre stage with daily performances showcasing Sarawak’s indigenous heritage. Visitors were treated to the mesmerising sounds of the Sape and nose flute, accompanied by traditional dances from the Iban, Bidayuh, Orang Ulu, and Melanau communities. The acclaimed Sarawakian band, Sada Borneo, known for their success on Asia’s Got Talent, delivered a special performance that had the crowd cheering.
Adventure seekers found plenty to excite them, with Penang-based tour operators promoting exclusive Sarawak travel packages. These offerings highlighted the state’s potential for eco-tourism and thrilling experiences amidst Borneo’s rugged landscapes.
Nature enthusiasts marvelled at displays showcasing Sarawak’s incredible biodiversity. From images of pristine rainforests to information about unique wildlife, the fair painted a vivid picture of Borneo’s natural wonders.
Food lovers indulged in a gastronomic journey through Sarawak’s culinary landscape. Local delicacies such as Kek Lapis Sarawak and Tuak Borneo tantalized taste buds, while live cooking demonstrations gave insights into traditional Sarawakian cuisine.
The festival atmosphere permeated the entire event, with interactive sessions, cultural puzzles, and live Q&A sessions keeping visitors engaged. Attendees also took home exclusive souvenirs as mementos of their Borneo experience.
“This fair is a crucial step in our tourism strategy,” YB Dato Sri Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah added. “We’re on track to welcome 4 million visitors this year, with 3.3 million already recorded by August.”
From families to young professionals, travel enthusiasts to students, the Sarawak Gateway to Borneo Fair offered a slice of Borneo for everyone. Visitors left with a deeper appreciation of Sarawak’s unique CANFF offerings and many with plans to experience the real thing.
The successful four-day event concluded on 13 October, leaving Penangites eagerly anticipating their next encounter with the wonders of Sarawak.
