A total of 2.6 million vehicles are expected to enter Penang for the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations, anticipated to occur on Monday. According to State deputy police chief, Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin, this figure is derived from estimates by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) concerning vehicles travelling via the North-South Expressway (PLUS) during Op Selamat 24, taking place from 29th March to 3rd April.
“Penang is located midway between Kedah and Perak and so on, which is why we expect this route to reach 2.6 million,” he noted during an assembly ceremony for the 218th Police Day Commemoration at the Penang police contingent headquarters. “Not only do the people of Penang use this highway to return to their hometowns, but also those from the neighbouring states.”
Mohd Alwi stated that 331 JSPT members will be on duty to carry out patrols and maintain control throughout the Op Selamat 24 period. He mentioned that only 10 per cent of the approximately 6,700 police officers and members of the Penang contingent have been granted leave for Aidilfitri, while the majority will continue their duties as usual.
Police responsibilities will include patrolling residential areas and villages to maintain safety and protect public interests, including property, due to the absence of residents during the festive period.
