Shangri-La Hotels Train Interns in Sustainable Practices

Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Resort and Shangri-La Golden Sands, Penang have completed a training programme for young hospitality professionals as part of International Youth Day celebrations.

Twenty hospitality interns from Indonesia participated in the three-day programme. The training focused on hotel sustainability and environmental responsibility.

A key component involved visits to Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Resort’s bottling plant. Interns observed the production of glass bottle drinking water that serves all guest rooms across both properties.

The glass bottle system has replaced single-use plastic bottles at both resorts. This initiative prevents more than one million 500ml plastic bottles from reaching landfills annually.

“We are proud to celebrate the next generation of hoteliers at Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Resort and Shangri-La Golden Sands, Penang this #InternationalYouthDay, joining the global movement to empower young leaders in hospitality,” the hotels stated.

The programme supports this year’s International Youth Day theme: “Local Youth Actions for the SDGs and Beyond.” Both properties aim to develop young leaders capable of driving sustainable practices in hospitality.

Shangri-La has adopted a “Triple S” framework for Environmental, Social, and Governance initiatives: STAY, SAVOUR, SHINE, and GOVERNANCE.

“Through dedicated training and mentorship programmes, we support young professionals as they develop their skills and leadership potential,” the company explained.

The hotels emphasized their commitment to youth development and environmental responsibility.

“By investing in youth and fostering sustainable practices, we are building a brighter, greener future for hospitality and our communities,” they added.

The initiative forms part of Shangri-La’s broader sustainability strategy and community engagement efforts in Penang.
